Manual Opens First Storefront in Chinatown

The camera brand Manual has opened a permanent retail and film processing space in New York.

Manual, a company founded in 2017 that produces the Holo digital camera, disposable cameras, and film, has transitioned from operating via pop-up locations to a permanent brick-and-mortar presence. The new storefront and photo lab is situated on Allen Street in a former point-of-sale supply store. The space functions as both a retail outlet and a film processing laboratory.

The design of the shop was a collaboration between the brand and the design-build studio Protean Practice. According to the founder of Manual, Malcolm Dia, the objective was to create a gathering spot for photographers that serves as a home base. The layout includes a retail area at the front and a section dedicated to hanging out, separated from the operational lab area by a pink curtain.

The interior and exterior materials were selected to reflect the aesthetic of the brand's products. The design incorporates plywood seating, metallic finishes, and baby-pink accents. A translucent polycarbonate upper bulkhead on the facade allows the 1800s brickwork of the building to remain visible. This choice of material was informed by the translucent plastic shell used in the Holo camera, which exposes the internal components of the device.

The architectural approach involved preserving elements of the building's original signage. Rather than a full replacement, the team stripped the existing covering while maintaining the structural skeleton. The original fluorescent light located behind the bulkhead was also restored. The facade features floor-to-ceiling glass and the brand name in a black font.

The shop is intended to facilitate a specific cycle of use for photographers, providing a space to purchase equipment, live their daily lives, and return to have film developed. The design aims to balance a wall of product with an area for social interaction.

Takeaway: Manual's new permanent location on Allen Street includes a film processing lab and retail space.
